The odds are not in your favor. Ever. The apps do make it easier than ever, and the difficulty that was previously there was part of what made it special, different.
Your office pool? Yeah, you have to get your picks in by lunch on Friday. Maybe it was straight head-to-head. Maybe the picks were w/ a spread, but probably not. You'd go week-to-week, and the winner of that week would get half of what was in the pool for the office that week, and the other half would be saved for whoever got the most wins at the end of the season.
Hey, guy who's doing this, I'm gonna be on vacation next week. Can I do my picks ahead of time? Yeah, I'll put in the money early.
I think I split the winnings in my office for the season in like 2008. I think it was like $300. The weekly takes were probably less than $50.
But I knew everyone else. And, rest assured that James was gonna suggest that I pick up the tab the next time we all hit the bar after work....
That sort of shit ain't happening with the apps.
And the state is making money.

@BrianMcWilliams The disability stuff hits more than a little close to home. We went to this theater in DC last week…..holy shit not a place for someone who can’t feel much of anything below the ribs.
One of our favorite restaurants is basically a no-go because of how different it is to get to, and use the single toilet in the men’s room.
But if you see me from the waist up, I look fine.
My wife was completely unaware how bad my vision was until she sat in the exam room and watched me try to take a test.
For professional stuff, I used the extra time ONCE because I needed to buy a cert to keep working.
Do I feel bad when the use things like early boarding? Yep. But I also do things like fly 1C partially to eliminate some of that guilt. (Protip, too, flying is very easy when you’re in a wheelchair w/ a 1C ticket….I do use a wheelchair at the airport…can’t walk fast or far. Tip your attendant!)
